ok guys i have searched and havent come up with any help yet so im asking.
i have a 1998 explorer xlt, i've had it for about a year and a month after i bought it the turn signal relay started making a noise. it sounds like a lie detecter, some times it is just a light tick, tic-tic, but then sometimes it just make a screeching buzzzzzzzzzzz. it dosent do it once the turn signal is being used only in the rest position. i have changed the relay twice and no luck.
Typically the buzzing when you use your turn signal is caused by a faulty multi-function switch in your steering column. Easy fix, costs around $55 at the dealer. Be sure to disconnect your battery before working on the steering column. I haven't heard of the buzzing at rest before.
I have the same Issue on my 98xlt, it will buzz while in turn position but not if I hold it like to change lanes. I also have a problem with the Windsheild washer not working, it's probably the the same switch!
I fixed the problem with the turn signal buzz and the winsheild washer not working. I took the Multifunction switch out and took it apart. Very dirty contacts, I think the contacts are copper plated and they were green and dirty. I used some contact cleaner and a wire brush, then I wiped it clean. Then I took a pencil erase to all the contacts. Everything is now working perfectly! Took about 1 hour total.
