My 94 ranger 2.3L 2wd standard 5 speed - 245000 kms
When I go up hill ( mostly moderate inclines) I here a tic tic ( like timing)
I'm in the correct gear around 3m rmp. Once I reduce acceleration slightly the ticking goes away. Problem is that I have to start down shifting which means my speed is greatly reduced at the crest of the hill. ( compression is good last check)
The older truck on high rollers you could advance the timing- this is not possible is it?
Any feedback is great thanks Craig
Thanks Ken, It is a ping sound
Have done tune-up recently.
There is no codes it is a pass?
Will check fuel pressure.
Besides for inclines the truck runs like a dream and is peppy for a 4cyl?
Any other advise?
Thanks in advance
What oil are you using? I only ask since mine did the same thing...... sort of. It is older, but if I went up a hill it would make noise. Two things that really helped mine were cleaning the WHOLE intake manifold and TB, then using the oil that Ford says should be used (5w30). When it had 10w40 it made noise. Just an idea.
I will double check. You are correct 5w30 is recomended and I believe thats whats in it. Mind you a month ago I changed the oil on my truck, wifes car, her gf van and her husbands truck plus my sisters car. So you can see why I may not remember.
G2IC_WRAITH what cleaner did you use or recommend (I have used several different types). I have the fuel rail, I could spray cleaner in through the intake?
Well that all depends on how you want to do it. If you don't want to turn a wrench I have seen very good results from Sea Foam. As long as you follow the directions it works good. I have never used it on my cars, but I have helped others do it. It is a popular thing in the import forums that I belong to too.
What I did was removed the manifold and TB and used STP TB cleaner that is safe for Fuel Injection and TBs. I removed all the sensors and put the manifold in an old dishpan as I sprayed it down and used an old toothbrush to reach inside. You would not believe the crap that was in there. I know a lot of the problem on mine was the EGR hole was almost closed up. I picked up several MPGs after this too. Of course I bought all new gaskets and lots of replacement vacuum hose (replaced PCV too). I figured it was a lot easier to replace any old hoses while I was in there.
Wow that's alot of tear down. I have never used sea foam b-4, I will give it try I'd rather not have to do the same tear down though. Maybe just a good spray through the intake maybe just what the doctor ordered. I'll keep you posted, hopefully I'll have time this weekend.
Thanks Craig
