The glow plugs that Ford uses are only 6 volt, not 12. That's why they work in 10 seconds instead of 30. Unfortunately that's also why they burn out so easily. Try the Beru (motocraft) plugs, they are very well made (all stainless) and seem to hold up many times longer than the spark plug brands. I think we should bring up a class action suit against them (autolight, champion, etc.) for all the pain they've caused us (pulling perfectly good heads).
Sounds good to me. Them heads aint easy to get off. And the cost between motorcraft and the cheap brands aint that much. Or atleast they should have to put warning lables on them. like. "Cation use of this plug may cause you to have to tear have yar hair out while removing"
well i got the treaded part out and the bottom part out now the rod is stuck down in the hole and will not come out <frozen in the hole > , i tried to blow it out by letting it run ,but no luck stuck bad.been soaking it with penatrating oil .cannot hear any compression coming out of the glow plug hole so i guess it means it has not fell into the clyinder yet so that is good.any further ideas ?? or maybe the clyinder is doa allready.does have a nice miss in it
if you had a dead cylinder you would have other issues.probably would have fuel in the eng. oil and would notice the blow by when its running.kinda sounds like that heads gotta come off!
i have about 400 pounds on all 7 cly but i can not take a compression test with the glow plug rod stuck in the head.on the one cly . it has a bad miss i am thinkinking the piston in the one cly is cracked as it smokes really bad ,any ideas ??
tried everything, nothing worked.no compression on that clyinder
decided to pull the valve cover, found a bent pushrod on the intake valve side. decided to pull the pump and valley cover and lifter was broken.retainer for the lifters was broken also .this would explain the low oil pressure and the bad miss.fuel was just going thru the exhaust and no air thru the intake to burn it .so the raw fuel was running thru and out the tail pipe.i will put it all together and hopefully there will now be compression to blow out the glow plug rod
Hi, I put this website for you to look at before. Some glow plugs distort when they burn out and cannot be pulled from the valve cover side. Please check this web article about 6.9 glow plug removal http://members.shaw.ca/k2pilot/Glow%...20article.html

HMMMMMM!! that link looks very familiar.
By the way--You DO NOT want to try and blow the glow plug out as it may lodge itself into the piston and cause more severe damage than is already present. You need to go ahead and pull the head off to get it out. Otherwise, you may end up with a major rebuild instead of a top end reuild.
Umm it may not apply but I am told that GM 5.7 Diesel Glow plugs will work in place of stock ford ones and last longer being 12 volt, we have yet to try it but do have a push button hooked up instead of the controller.
