Hey all, I don't get any response from the tranny forum. Is there anyway to tighten up the shifting pattern on my old truck. It sure seems loose.
\Thanks, Ray.
You mean tighter shifts? I always thought about cutting a foot off that excessivly long shifter to lower the 1/4 mile shift distance.
Or you want a stick that feels tight to grab? The sway is normal, sway to the left for 1+2, sway to right and it goes strait into 3+4, I think thats the idea behind it.
I mean that the shifter is wobbly while in gear and it just seems that the throw between gears is excessive. I don't have anything to compare with, could this be normal? I know it is not a sports car, but I would like to able to go through the gears a little smoother and faster.
\Thanks, Ray
You are never going to be able to power shift with the NP435, and matter of fact, they recommend that you double-clutch for down-shifting! It's a truck tranny. 'Nuff said.
You don't say if that is an original tranny, but the shifting forks tend to wear out after a certain amount of time, especially if you like to rest your hand on the shifter all the time like me in case you have to initiate emergency maneuvers! They can be replaced from the top without pulling the tranny, but you may need to have a reference manual to get them set up right.
The synchros also go away after a certain amount of miles which definitely can cause shift difficulty, but that's a whole different situation and probably points you to an overhaul.
Good Luck, Steve
Steve,
I was not looking to Power Shift, just be able to go through the gears without having to search for them.
Is an overhaul something a person of "average mech ability" could do? Where can I find the necessary manuals and parts for an overhaul?
\OBTW it is the original tranny.

Thanks, Ray.
Ray,
I haven't personally done an overhaul, wimped out and had Transmission World in Bend do mine a couple of years ago while I was building up my newest engine!?! Just passing along what I've read/heard as far as component problems.
I got a "free" NP435 in an engine deal, and found that it was 1/2 full of water from sitting outside when I went to look at it. If you'd like one to practice on, just come and get it. I was going to tear it apart to see if I could learn something, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen. You might even find that the shift forks would swap into yours and see if that helped?
Drivetrain.com appears to have pretty good coverage as far as drivetrain parts, but that's not to say that your local NAPA guys couldn't fix you up too! The shop manual CD sold on this site would contain the instructions for working on it.
Steve
I find that my NP 435 is nice and tight. I thought that they were all loose until I got this one. it shifts nice and tight no slop in gear or anything. Actually sounds like a ratchet click when you shift gears.

I also could not find the gears on my NP435 - until I found this simple problem. The shifter actually pivots on 2 pins. The pins ride in a slot on each side of a ball. The slots wear out and the shifter gets sloppy. You need to remove the shifter by pushing down and turning the retainer collar where the shifter enters the trans. Remove the retainer then pull out the shifter. I filed down the burrs and then welded in some new metal. Careful work with a grinder restored the slot. You would not believe how nice it shifts now! By the way, if anyone has a used shifter they can spare, I would feel better if I replaced mine rather then use the welded one!
I hope you got what info you were looking for. I left it open for a while because I didn't want to see you not get an answer but these posts really need to stay in the tranny forum. Thanks
The applicable year truck forum might also work for you.
