more 9 inch info?
I recently purchased a full size 1966 Ford car 9 inch rear end. I have been reading the 9" axle info, and am a little confused.
The 9 inch I bought measures 58" backing plate to backing plate. Will this fit into the rear of my truck?
I talked to a guy at bobsf100, and he says it will be ok (Im relocating the spring perches) But I figured a little feedback from you guys wouldnt hurt.
Stock wheels will put your tires 1 5/8" closer to your box on each side. You'll have to check the clearance that you have now. The stock axle is 61 1/4" between backing plates.
If it looks to be too close you have the option of buying custom wheels with the needed backspacing.
If the axle came out of a Mustang, Cougar, or Ranchero then it will be short enough. The full size cars had a slightly wider axle.
What front-end do you have? We've been working on the documentation of a how-to for a Ford 9" with passenger car lug pattern. The basic plan is to use a F-100 9" and mid-70's intermediate driver side axle shaft for a drum brake setup.
I also have a disk-brake axle shaft from a big Lincoln that's the right length and the bearing retainer seems to bolt up to the F-100 axle just fine. I'll have to investigate bearing and collar fitment before the verdict is in on that lash-up.
I have the 5 on 4 1/2 bolt pattern all around now.
Hmm, we will see. Tomorrow I am working on motor mounts.
