matching rear bolt pattern with IFS

Hello guys,
I recall reading a few posts here and there about ye ole 5 on 5 in the rear, and 5 on 4.5 in the front. Im nearing that stage in my IFS install (Volare) and I would really like to keep my rear end I have now, as finding a decent 9" with the right bolt pattern has been a bit of a chore. What should I do? I am really partial to my red ford steelies (with the dogdishes) and whitewalls.

1) have some stock ford rims fabricated using the bolt pattern from my Volare rims?

2)use those dangerous adapters?

3)figure out the "use the driver's
side axle, backing plate, and drum from a 72-79
Torino, Ranchero,LTD II,or 77-79 T-bird or Cougar" method ?(Baffled by the way)

4)leave them nice and ghetto style mismatched. (cant do that)

What should I do, as Im having some trouble figuring this one out.

Thanks guys!

I am running different size tires on rear, so I was not concerned about matching bolt patterns. If I was I would use those "dangerous" adapters that I bet I have driven at least 30,000 miles on another vehicle. They do move the wheel 1" further out though. I have checked the torque on those and never found them loose, nor cracked. Good luck.

55forder,

You've got me confused.

You have the wheels now and they fit the Ford 5 X 5 bolt pattern?

OR

you have the wheels now and they fit the Mopar 5 X 4.5 bolt pattern?

OR

you have the wheels now and they fit the Ford 5 X 4.5 bolt pattern?

Plse clarify.

Thanks,

If I understand your question correctly, you want to have the same bolt pattern on all your wheels and you want it to be the 4.5".

Sounds like #1 is required. From that point on it is one of the following:

a. Wheel adapters
b. Check to see if your current axle hubs can be redrilled to the 4.5" pattern (auto machine shop)
c. Purchase new axles with 4.5" pattern (Vendors such as Strange, Moser, etc.)
d. #3 above

Hope this helps. Larry

I have the volare front end and the lincoln versailles rearend. Both have the 5 on 4.5 hole pattern. It sounds to me like the easiest thing to do would be to have your existing wheels modified with new centers that have both bolt patterns in them. A wheelright can take out the old centers and weld in new ones with the samwe back spacing or different if you prefer. I know that Stockton Wheel routinely sells wheels with both the 5 on 4.5 and the 5 on 4.75. So I don't see why they couldn't make the others for you. Give them a try. Good luck, John

Well,
to answer everything in one post, here is what Im going to do.

Im going to go to the boneyard and pick up a pair of the stock Ranger 5 on 4.5 steel rims, paint them, and put my dog dishes on them for the front. Im not concerned with carrying spares, as half the people I know drive tow trucks. (dont hold it against me)

stock 5 on 5 in the rear
Volare 5 on 4.5 in the front. Caps will cover them though.

Thanks for the replies!

That's what I did when I put the Dakota IFS in. I had the stock Ford 9" 5 on 5's in the back, but the Dak lug pattern is 5 on 4.5". So, I had to get 15X7 chrome smoothie rims (to mathch the rear wheels) and narrower tires for the front. So now I have 255/70X15's on 15X8 in the rear and 225/70X15's on 15X7's in the front!

not again!

my heart is breaking again.....

"While the "Volare" IFS gives you the same 5” X 4 ½” 5 bolt pattern that is common to many later Ford rear axles, the larger diameter Mopar hub may force you to use aftermarket rims. Re-drilling “Volare” rotors to stock 5X 5½”pattern is probably not possible. "

You would think that with as many Volare / Gibbons suspended trucks out there as there are, somebody like No-Limit would manufacture some Mopar rotors with a 5 on 5.5 pattern. Perhaps someone should put a bug in their ear...

I dont want to see those (my opinion) hiddeous looking rims painted red on my truck. If you look at my gallery, I want the wheel and tire combo to be similar, with my dogdish hubcaps.

I guess a call to Stockton wheel is in order?
Ill search around, and post what Ive found.

Because everybody will see hey 55forder, ain't them Dodge wheels?

I heard that 200 times before I bought my smoothies. My Mopar squad car wheel center holes were too small for the 9 inch hub centers too.

Hey Forder, say hi to Frank there at Stockton wheel for me. Just tell those guys your problem, and they'll have several solutions. They also have a good website so you can have all the vital measurements for calculating backspace, etc. Good luck, John
