They're not "air" bags. There's no air involved. They're actually sodium azide grenades. When they explode, the bag traps the gasses liberated in the explosion. FWIW sodium azide is a deadly poison and unused bags from scrap vehicles are a major environmental hazard. If anyone except another gov't department came up with such a hairbrained idea the EPA would have a fit. Since the HTSHA mandates them, they're all right. Go figure.
I never like that fact that my 1995 F150 has an airbag, I always wear my seatbelt, plus I was in a fender bender 2 years ago and it never went off. Sure wish I could turn the thing off after hearing that.

Since we are seat belt wearers, we always disable the airbags. Had one blow up into my face while replacing a turn signal switch on a Lincoln bakc in 95, so I am not fond of them.
my dad wrecked his 96 f150 on the highway a few years ago. completely totaled the truck. the seatbelt and airbag left him untouched. he had some friction burns on his face from the airbags, but he's glad they were on there. i always hear people say that airbags will make it worse. they are usually the same people that say' "i dont wear my seatbely, because if i get in an accident they'll trap me in the car." everybody i know who wrecked their cars and had seatbelts and airbags were glad they had them.
