Running hot, or not?

I have a 79 Bronco, it has a 351M. I have put in a 160 thermostat, new sending unt, now I did drop it once, my fingers arent as small as they used to be, I have flushed the radiator and still it goes straight to the H on the guage after a few minuets of running. I pulled the water pump off this morning, and the shaft is not loose, and the fins are all there. It has a small amount of resistence on the shaft though, but with a bearing that should be normal. When I first noticed this I could pull the cap of and there would be minimal circulations which would tell me the guage is shot or the sending unit. Then I thought the water pump. But if the truck was that hot, I should'nt have been able to take the cap off because of the pressure. And I for sure would'nt have been able to do it without having a anitfreeze cocktail. Any suggestions?

does the engine give any other signs of being hot? like sluggish power, radiator cap bleeding off pressure, and needing to really stand into the throttle to get going? you could install an auxiliary temp gauge to get a handle on what temp you are actually seeing?

No drivablilty problems whatsoever. It is strange and frustrating at the same time.

could be the stock gauge and/or sending unit acting up ?sometimes a different gauge acting up can cause the others to read funnybecause of the way they are wired from the factory. a bad ground can cause some funny problems. have you tried an actual thermometer in the coolant? if you can get the cap off safely, or just start out with it off?

I'm thinking it is on the guage. I bought a mech. gauge now. I will put the pump back on with the 160 thermostat and see what happens.

one other hint is if the knocks and pings at all then it is hot. i have been going through this problem too, only mine gauge works. i got electric fans! big mistake. the old fashion motor driven fan works ten times better. but when it heats up enough it will more than likly knock and ping

See, I am not having any drivability problems. It runs great. I think I just have a bad ground or gauge problem. I bought a new aftermarket gauge today, I am going to put it all back together tonight to see if that is it.
