V10man, I took your advise and ordered the Isspro trany temp and Boost guage today. DIS was on back order for both. I went to Isspro home page and ordered it strieght from the warehouse in KY. I hope they send the correct plug, I am sure they will the tech guy was real helpfull. Thank you for all the info, I would have never know about Isspro and how easy (I think) it will be to install.
Thanks to the TSBs you provided, I was finally able to convince Ford to do the work. I didn't necessarily have to 'give them hell' but they weren't exactly "willing" to do the job. First, I tried in vain to get the service writer to reference TSB 00-23-10 and 00-24-4. She kept telling me all she could do was list the problem and the technician would be able to diagnose the problem. Second, the service writer calls and tells me the technician drove the vehicle and could not duplicate the problem (they must learn this patented reply in their first week of training). Let's see, the technician drove the vehicle with no trailer, no grade at sea level with an ambient temp of no more than 72F. Hmmm... This is where I had to get a bit more forthright with my solution to the problem. Oh, and they tried to convince me the truck already had a trans cooler. Of course but if they would please review the TSBs...
Okay, so after driving three days in a humiliating compact rental, I was able to pick up my fortified for towing V10 F350. All in all, the work got done under warranty. I have issues with the service department at the dealership I bought the vehicle but FORD took care of it (other minor warranty items needing repair were forgotten requiring another service ordeal).
So thank you V10man, landadams and the rest of you contributing Ford enthusiasts that make this site my most frequented on the net.
I'm interested if anyone has installed an aftermarket oil-to-air trans cooler in addition to the factory oil-to-air cooler. I have a '99 F350, V10, Auto and am thinking of adding an extra cooler. If anyone has, is there a difference? If so, how much? I assume you would need a temp gauge to see the difference.
Is it a big project to do? I'm also wondering if it would block too much air from flowing thru the radiator.
Also, has anyone installed a gauge pod that fits onto the driver's side windshield column? I've seen them made for two and three gauges. How much are they and are they easy to install? I would think they would provide an excellent position for any gauge.
I bought my 350 used and it had the Isspro temp gauge and an auxillary fan (assuming the air-to-oil cooler was stock). That wasn't enough once I put a load on the truck at low speeds (see previous messages in the body of this post).
I am wondering how to approach the dealer to change out my radiator with the TSB, since I don't even have an auxillary temp gauge. I tow daily, though the trailer only weighs 4000.
I have 16K on the truck now (2000 V-10) and I considering changing out the trans fluid to Mobil 1 - It was mentioned that the drain process is easy - Anyone know if the drain for the T-converter is accessible without pulling the pan?
If anone has any ideas how best to approach the dealer I would be grateful for a response.
I reviewed the TSBs referenced by V10man and gave the Ford service writer a description of the problem I encountered as well as throwing in a few points from the TSBs. As I stated previously, the service dept. I went to wasn't exactly offering to do the work without a more forceful attitude on my part. Stand your ground and let them know that if the TSB isn't performed, the visit you make when your tranny goes won't be as friendly.
The TQ converter can be easily drained. If you look on the bottom of the bellhousing there is a round rubber plug. Remove that to access the converter. Now somehow you need to rotate the converter to line up the drain plug. I use a remote starter switch to bump the engine a bit. Remove the plug and let her drain. Plan on having a big container under there because you'll be draining 14-16 quarts total.
Depends a lot on your realtionship with your dealer as the TSB states that the dealer will examine the transmission and determine if it has been overheated or damaged and THEN only they will do the TSB (assuming the vehicle is in warranty)!!!
I have a pretty good relationship with my dealer after having done business with them for many years and I simply told them that I ALWAYS pull a #7000 TT and that the transmission seemed as though it was running hot to me, having smelled "something like tranny fluid" and the floor seemed warmer than normal over the transmission hump...
Guess I got lucky as there was no argument at all...
Regarding TSB's you can go to the Ford insider website at this url: "http://www.myfseries.fordvehicles.com" ... Establish a log on and password and then "click" on "TSB's" in the upper right hand portion of the screen... Put in your truck model, year, etc, etc and you will see a very comprehensive list of Ford TSB's and their description for that particular model...

I installed the Isspro Trans temp. guage along with a turbo boost guage and it was REALLY easy. At first I thought the trans temp. guage was not working, it really takes a few minutes to warm up. Thank you for all the information it was really helpful.
If anyone is looking to buy one go to the Isspro home page they have three warehouses. I used the one in KY. and spoke with Ken he was also very helpful. I tried DIS but the guages I wanted were backordered. If you want to get the turbo boost guage get the hose kit that has 12' of tubing 6' is just to short.

I bought the truck used and it had an aftermarket trans temp gauge. Normal driving it doesn't even register (lowest reading is 140). Towing <>6500#, it hovers around 180+. Climbing w/ trailer on a serious grade (3500-6000' in <10 miles) it was between 250-260.
A friend has gone through 2 warrantied transmissions on his SD. Best he can tell, it's from backing up his 30' 5th wheel.
I appreciate having a trans temp gauge (there's even an auxillary fan) but am in need of a benchmark.
Somewhat related, I've been told that more frequent trans oil changes help as preventive maintenance if you tow. Someone even suggested an aftermarket higher capacity pan w/ drain plug in order to service yourself.
New guy here and this is what we found, we have to run a front licence plate and the factory trans cooler sits behind and below it. Well protected but not in direct air flow....? Now I do not have a trans temp on my 01 SD but my buddy has one on his 00 SD. By cutting the top half of the licence plate bracket off and dropping the licence plate down (just drill 2 new holes in the plastic bracket thats remaining and use a plastic licence plate cover over the plate) the trans temp under heavy load towing dropped 20 degrees. Total cost $7.00.
