verify trans temp gauge
I installed a trans temp gauge on my expedition (4r70e) and I get very low temps on the gauge. the sender is in the pressure port, and it works, but I'm wondering how I can verify the number I'm seeing on the gauge.
on a normal day the highest reading I get on my 20 mile drive into work is about 125ish or maybe a little more if it is in the 80's. even towing my 2,000 lbs car trailer last weekend the temp never got much above about 125 (its an analog gauge so exact numbers are a guess here).
yesterday it was 96 degrees out and at the end of my trip home it was at about 150.
my explorer (4r70w) would typically run a touch over 160 in similar weather, and touch lower than 160 if it was in the 80's outside. so I'm wondering if the gauge is working correctly, or if the temps are just that much lower.
any ideas on the best way to verify the accuracy of a gauge?
I drove it home yesterday and the gauge was showing just a touch above 100°F maybe 110-120 ish (hard to say for sure). so I shut it off and crawled under and took some temps with my IR gun.
the pan was showing about 137 across the whole pan. the sender, and everywhere around the test port was reading in the 150's. the sender itself (as best as you can tell with an IR) was reading pretty consistent at 157°.
150-160 makes much more sense to me than 110-120. the temp outside was about 85°F, and from past experience with the 4r70's 160 is about where it should be in that kind of weather.
so, I guess i'll call B&M and see if they can or will do anything for me.... I'm pretty sure the gauge is just reading low.
nice that customer service still exists, particularly with on-line purchases.
we'll see if the new one works any better.
