Question 460 timing

my dad and i are gonna replace the timing chain and gear our 460 soon. we found out that our 460 in our 76 lincoln was retarded 4 degrees so in order to liven it up again we were going to set the new one at zero. but i also heard that advancing it would improve the overall engive performance even more but my dad says we should leave it at zero and just see what its like. is there any disadvantage by advancing it instead, so that we dont have to spend all that time and energy getting back in there to advance it later on?

Do not set it advanced. Set it straight up at 0.

Then adjust your ignition timing to advance it. Start at about 10 -12 degrees BTDC.

o ok...thanks a lot for the advice man...i've been debating about that one for awhile...one more question: will there be a noticeable difference in low end power or will it just make the engine run more efficient?

You may notice some improvement.

This straight up timing issue moves the power band down to a lower, more usable rpm.
