It runs fine at idle but after about 15-20 minutes of driving the fuel cuts and motor dies i can get it restarted every time but after the first cut of the day it get more frequent like every block or so did full tuneup and fuel filter.. whats the deal any ideas
Get right up on top of the engine so that you can look and reach down between the engine and firewall. You will maybe see a wiring harness plug stuck to the EGR cross-over pipe. Mine was kind of melted to the pipe and had to be pried off with a screw driver. There were 8 wires in the harness. The only 8 wire harness under the hood is for the fuel injectors. Once the plastic of the harness plug got hot, I think it conducted current and shorted out the injectors which killed the engine. After it cooled for a couple of minutes, I was good for only a short time and then it would die again. This happened to me towing a 20' travel trailer through the Rockies from Alberta to BC. Friggin near killed me and my family when it died on one hill. Once I got out of the Rockies (after dying at least 30 - 40 times), I was dead on the side of the road in Revelstoke for 4 days waiting for parts. I did the fuel filter first (no good) and then the fuel pump and limped to the next town and then did the ignition module. Still no good, so at the next town Midas bent me over real good for a complete end to end exhaust system. Still no good, but since I could hear a slight exhaust leak (even after my new system) I was able to find that my cross-over pipe was leaking. It was only while changing the pipe that I found the harness stuck to it. I have never had the problem since, 4 years later. Zap strap it up to the firewall and it'll be OK. Sorry for the long winded reply. Hope it helps.
What year and model truck did this happen to you in by the sound of it i think your egr is located in a different place than mine i may be wrong... thanks
Sorry Irish, I may have given you a bum steer with the EGR reference. After consulting my manual, the proper terminology should have been; "Thermactor system". This is the air pump system which injects fresh air into the exhaust gases (crossover piping to the back of each head) to burn up un-used gases and help protect against exhaust system overheating.
