I have a 1990 ford bronco with a 302 MFI (multipoint fuel injection), just replaced the fuel pump and fuel filters (one that is on the bottom of the fuel pump and the one on the frame) bronco ran fine for a couple of days but every now and then when i turn the key on you can hear the pump running and it won't turn off, and when this happens the bronco is extremely hard to start (have to pump the gas fast to get it to turn over) but after it starts it runs perfect. Does anyone know what the problem could be? Could it be the relay or the regulator? If so how do i test these parts?
Fords have a problem with those relays sticking. Your 90 is a bit different than my 93, but try switching the ABS and fuel pump relays around. They should all be in the underhood fuse panel. If your problem goes away, then you need a new relay. Usually if its doing that, it will also do it with the key off. I think the 87-91 models have 2 fuel pumps, 1 in the tank and one on the frame rail.
you need to check the fuel pressure at the rail. also check your oil and smell it for the presence of fuel. if gas is in the oil do not try and turn it over anymore. you can pull the vacum line off of the fuel pressure regulator and if gas comes out of the vacum line then you have found the issue and need to replace the fpr. the pump staying on makes me think either the fpr is bad or you have a leaking injector.
On my old 88' Bronco (302) it had a low pressure pump in the tank and a high pressure on the frame by the drivers foot. On my current Bronco (90' 351) it only had a high pressure in the tank.
