Alright, i bought my bronco about 4 months ago, and the guy that sold it to me told me that he had just had the oil changed and everything was running well, which it was, but about 2 weeks ago i went to have the oil changed and a tune up. Turns out that there was no oil, and the top to cylinders (1 and 5) had no compression. the mechanic told me that it wouldn't do any harm to keep driving it until i could get it looked at. So in the mean time i am trying to figure out whether it would be better to rebuild those two cylinders or just go ahead and get a new engine.
sometimes those are the beaks when buying a used car. over the years i have learned to check and re-check everything BEFORE i buy the car. i would reccomend a new or reman engine. unless the orig has very low miles.
Where did the oil go? On the drive way, out the exhaust? If you don't have compression on #1 & 5 that truck would of been running like ****! It must idle real rough! Low compression I could see. Did you see him actually yank the plug and hook the comp. tester to it, or is he guessing? Did the oil pressure guage register anything? Something ain't right Dixie!
yeah he told me that it read zero compression and that the rest were fine. why should it be idleing rough and run like **** cause he told me that since it was 1 & 5 it stays balanced.
But then you have only 6 cylinders working and not eight..should be running like **** with no power. If the engine has high miles..get a reman put in.....at least then you will have a warranty for the motor
Compression is what gives you the power. No compression in 2 cylinders means that they are not firing, and that means they are not earning there keep in a way. Hence, it should run ike crap and have one hell of a vibration too it.
No kidding! It may be possible to hone out the 2 cylinders a tad and install new rings on the pistons, but that would be VERY temporary. You will still have a groove at the top of the cylinder that can break a ring, or you won't have enough seal to get more compression. You could overhaul the motor, but with the previous owner's questionable history of maintenance, the rebuild may not last long either. Always check your oil!!!
I would make sure your mechanic knows what the heck he is talking about. It would be running horrible if two cylinders were not firing. If it's running ok, just keep checking the oil and drive the sucker!
Oh, and by the way, you indicated you bought it 4 months ago? You realize that you are supposed to check your oil at every gas fillup, right? (or at least every couple of weeks!)
If you have zero compression then it may very well be a valve problem not a piston problem. You need to put a few teaspoons of oil in the cyl. and perform the compression chaeck again and see if it goes up. if so bad rings and if not then a valve problem.
I have never seen a zero reading before and it could only come from a very large opening in the cyl.
Little story about a car that came into the shop...
lady bring this older buick in..and says she just bought and the guy said it needed a tuneup....
I said NP...changed wires ..plugs..cap..button...
started up and the thing still had a really bad miss.....
pulled plugs back out...checked firing order...check for fire...all was good....
hooked compresion gauge up....had good compresion on all but 1 cylinder....pulled valvecovers...all rockerarms was working....didnt look like anything wrong......figured it was a bad valve....pulled head off...and BINGO....found the miss...missing piston that is...it still had rod and piston pin...but no piston....and to beat all it had a can stuff in the cylinder..looked a small coffee can...
needless to say she took the car back to guy and demaned her money back....
I have never seen anything like it ever again....I will tell ppl about it and they LOL..but dont seem to believe me...but it is a true story
Hmm. She must have been running decaf. Not enough octane, I mean caffeine. Usually the coffee can works great if you run it with super-straight black coffee, no cream and sugar. Folgers works best! Ha-ha
