Lightbulb Virus Update

I recently got a email through Outlook Express from a yahoo account. I know your not supposed to put email addy's in these, but the email contained the I-worm/Bagle.G virus...so once again, be leary on opening e-mail attachments. I spent two hours reformatting my pc after i opened this email....and yes, curiosity got the better of me. the reason i opened this email, was because part of the addy was a ford related name, so i thought it was someone from here maybe? but it wasnt..lol. Are email addy's sold to outside companies on here by any chance? just wondering, hope you all are virus free

Also be careful of e-mails contained Zip files with the caption
" fun just for you" or "something about you"

That sucks that curiosity killed the cat. This goes for anyone who doesnt have an antivirus program, or dont keep theirs current. You can run a free virus scan online for any computer. The scan can be located at http://housecall.trendmicro.com . I only open emails from people I know. Sure, I do lose some emails from people trying to contact me...but if its important, they will send it again.

Virus Protection

If you don't already have an antivirus program, you ought to get one. Grisoft makes a decent free version for Windows you can
download here. It automatically updates its virus definition files just like pay versions and seems to work pretty well.

Just make sure you download the free version--which stays free--and not the trial version, which expires.

im running avg...and im fairly computer friendly....its just that email got the better of me...and i find that avg is better than norton, its a smaller program, doesnt take up as much space..and i feel it more efficient..but those are just my opinions..im not trying to get a antivirus war started..lol

But.... If they send it again, do you still not open it?

Just kidding. However, opening the email themselves is not a problem. It's opening attachments that is dangerous.

Almost any attachment these days can contain something dangerous. I concur with all those that recommend a good AV program. In addition, I never open ANY attachment unless i know who it's from and what it is.

Not only attachments anymore. Embedded pictures in emails can contain viruses, as well as open the door to receive a virus (some of those pictures are prompted to load from a webpage, and not in the email...so you can see the carnage it can create). That is one of the drawbacks to using MS Outlook (which I do). Oh, and as for 'do you not open it again'? I only use that practice on my main email addy. My various hotmail and other accounts get stack dumped all the time, without a second thought.

You know, I've been in the computer business for 27 years. I was marveling or digusted the other day by all the stuff we have to do now to protect ourselves.

In the old days a place like FTE was a bulletin board and you called the bulletin board directly and as long as you didn't download programs you had nothing to worry about.

Now, we need an anti virus program, a spam blocker and a personal firewall just to stay relatively safe and agrevation free. 30% of the email I get stops at my spam blocker.

It just makes me wonder if I really need all this graphics whizz bang or if I couldn't get along just fine if we went back to plain text.

I run no protection at all and have never had a virus problem.

We never open email attachments though to avoid problems and aren't on Outlook email either.

Been into computers since early 80's.

Sometimes I think the AV companies must hire people to create the problem for their solutions. Isn't it odd that they know it's out before it's a problem, and then the fix is out before half the country knows what is going on? Then tons of people rush out to buy new AV ware, and upgrades for their current stuff.

This is a major security risk in and of itself. Not saying that site, since I have not visited it and will not, but, that is how a lot of back door programs get installed.
