I recintly replaced my lower radiator hose and thermostate and I am now losing coolant but I cant see where it is going there is no obvious leaks any ideas
Yes and no. The heater core be leaking slowly but more times that not it will let you it's bad by the coolant getting all over the window if the heater is on. A bad head gasket doesn't mean your oil has to be milky. it could be burning the coolant in the cylinder but here again you may see white smake and have a good chace of over heating.
You could have the coolant check for exhaust gases. This will confirm if you have a good or bad head gastket.
I smell coolant burning when I get out of my truck but can't find any either. i di just replace the timing chain and i think I need to tighten up the bolts on the timing cover again. Like you I can not find a leak. I did just have a rad leak but I installed a new one.
If the seals between the radiator and the reservoirs at its side are starting to go, you can lose coolant when the pressure builds while driving. You often won't have the obvious puddle. You can check for wetness and signs of coolant immediately below the raidiator or you can have a shop pressure test the radiator.
I have the same problem with my 95. No evidence of wettness or leakage. I smell coolant after driving but not if the truck is sitting cold. I have had a garage pressure test the radiator which checked ok. I also had the hoses replaced. My overflow tank seems leak free. No milky oil changes. I have been adding fluid to the overflow tank every now and then. I have thrown my hands up also.
Have you pressure checked, or just replaced the radiator cap. The seal can go bad, especially after being opened or messed with like you had to do when replacing the hoses/t-stat. Sounds like "leak tracer" and system pressure check time. Cheers.
Hmmm, been having the same probs too! Actually had this problem before and we're wondering if we're going to end up having to replace my radiator. We did put some of that Barrs (sp?) Stop Leak in and no problems until recently. Might just try that again.
