Fuel Pump pressure relief

A quick question for anyone. I have a 1990 bronco 5.8L I need to replace the fuel pump in the tank. After reading the Haynes Manula it says relieve the pressure before dropping the tank. My question is the manual says use the inertia switch to do this , by running the engine until it runs out of fuel. My fuel pump is out so I can't run the engine, so how else can I relieve the pressure???

Read up on the inertia switch. Just trip it to relieve the pressure. There should be little or no pressure if the pump is bad. Don't forget to reset it before starting after you finish with the new pump.

I have read up on it but it says run the engine after you push the switch up. If I can't run the engine how will I release the pressure. The pump just went out so does that mean I probably have low pressure? I'd hate to find out the hard way..

If the pump went out..and it has been sitting for at least 24 hrs..then the pressure should be down....not completely..but enough..just dont wear anything you really like when you go to disconnect the lines. You will get a little spit but nothing to make a flame thrower out of.

When I removed the gas tank and hp pump from my 88 Bronco, I could not start the motor either. I could not even crank it (no battery). There was no pressure in the system, though i did pop the inertia switch for good measure. You should have no problem. Even if there is a little residual pressure in the lines, it won't blow up! Just spits a little gas wherever you disconnect a line. The lines use a safety-type clip, but once you figure out how to remove them, it's easy. And good luck!!!

Just in case anyone was wondering, to relieve the fuel pressure on Ford Vehicles w/ EFI (most anyway) there is a little cap on your fuel injector line, which runs on top of your block beside your intake manifold. This cap looks just like the ones to fill your tires - unscrew it and push down on the valve and a small amount of gas will squirt out. Fuel Pressure Relieved!
