Anything that will help the "breathing" of the truck will. Air intake, exhaust. You could get a custom programed chip like a chip, that will help out as well.

You get 20 with your big 4.0, and I get 21 with my little 2.5L. I do drive the poor beast pretty hard, but it sounds to me like you are getting excellent mileage. I did however just install a K&N conical filter and insulated my intake tube. I'll let you know how that helped my mileage next time I fill up.

Is putting the tailgate down while traveling on the highway a myth?

Most of the miles I put on my truck are highway miles since I work 30 minutes from where I live and an hour from where I go to school.

"Is putting the tailgate down while traveling on the highway a myth"?

My Ranger owners manual advises not to do this as the tailgate could come off if you hit a bump. I get about 20 overall in the summer with 4x4, 4.0, 5-spd, and 3.73's so you're doing just fine on mileage. Best mileage for me is at a steady 45MPH on a country road; 23.9MPG.

Yeah your best mileage will come just after it shifts into 4th while slightly accelerating.

Running with the tailgate down IS A MYTH. I have done research on it, and some windtunnel tests have proven it. The air in the bed spins around and acts like a tonneau cover (kinda). If you really want to improve mileage, dont drive a truck, but 20 is good enough for me.

Be happy you get 20, i get like 12, and in the summer 15, but thats all in town hot-rodding. i suppose if i was nice and drove like i was 90 years old i'd get better, and if i drove more on the highway.

yes. tailgate down is bad. wind tests show that the best mileage is w/a cover, followed by tailgate up, the tailgate down. plus, w/the tailgate down your bed sides have no support. the best way to increase fuel efficienct is to drive easy. try to coast whe you see a red ligh up ahead rather than keep gassing then brake.

I definatly drive easy - that's one of my biggest petpeves, still having your foot on the gas even when it's obvious you're going to hit a red light.

Jessfactor, just remember that coasting isn't legal everywhere, at least not here in iowa, but i have done it for a long time. Besides, how would the cops know if you are free wheeling unless they are in the truck with you? right?
