I have two professional code readers at work (I am not a mechanic, I am an auto theft investigator and we use these to identify computers in cars). So, I really do not know how to use them. They are both quite a bit larger than the aftermarket ones and have a lot more buttons.
I have one that is made by Diamler Chrysler and another made by GM. Both have OBDII connectors and a couple of other connectors. My question is what connecters do I use to hook up to my 94 F150 5.8 to get codes. I hooked the Chrysler one up to a 2000 Crown Vic and it worked, but I dont think my 94 has a OBDII.
Is anyone familiar with either of these machines. Do I need to get a pci card for pre-OBDII vehicles.
What brands are they??? I have a 92 f150 (pre-obdII) and 95 GMC jimmy (obdII) At the time I bought mine, I had to purchase two seperate units, one with a "ford" plug, and one with a "generic" obd II plug, obviously I am not able to use generic one on my ford, because it wont fit, not the other way around. I am also not able to swap the actual units (the handheld units). They are not compatible. But I have called the manufacturer and there are updates available to make them compatible. I hope this helps...let me know if there is anything else.
If they're made by Chrysler and GM, are you sure they can read other manufacturers' pre-OBD-II codes? OBD-II is more standardized, that may be why it read your 2000. Your '94 should be OBD-I.
I've used a couple Snap-on scanners, and they use adapters for each manufacturer that attach to the end of the cable. If that's the case with yours, you'll need the Ford style adapter.

I will try to hook them up with an OBD I connector tomorrow. I just want to pull the codes. We will see if they will recognize the pre 96 codes. Thanks for all the help.
Where is the OBD I connector located, under the dash like OBD II?
