Anybody out there know of a source for Mercon ATF. The only product I can find is a multi use product. (Mercon/DextroIII) I don't want to go to a synthetic, just looking for a good single spec. product and who to buy it from.
My 02 calls for Mercon V so watch for what type of Mercon too. I ended up using a partial synthetic Mercon V by Pennzoil I believe. It seems to be doing fine with that
I believe Mercon V applications are what Ford is against "general purpose" ATF for. Only use ATF labeled "Mercon V", it is usually a synthetic blend. Some of the synthetics say DexronIII/Mercon/MerconV, these are the ones to NOT USE in Mercon V applications.....

Greg, What is you 02? My 4R100 Trannys dipstick says MERCRON ONLY so does my owners manul it also stats NO MERCRON V
Originally posted by johnsdiesel No it's not! Ford specifically says not to use ATF that has multiple ratings. Mercon only.
Yeah see I do know what I am talking about here. Ford warns against multiple MERCON ratings, such as fluids that are rated dual use Mercon and Mercon V, which is fairly common.
hey greg i have an 02 as well and it only calls for mercon not mercon v, maybe we have different trannys, i dont know, anyways i changed the fluid about a month ago and used pennzoil mercon/dexron rated stuff and everything seems to be shifting fine. jusy my 2 cents.
What will happen if you use Mercon V instead of Mercron? If Mercron V is a synthetic blend and there are owners are switching to a fully synthetic ATF, will switching damage the transmission or change the shift? I thought a synthetic ATF had desirable benefits over factory fill. I had a 96 Crown Victoria that had torque converter shutter. Under warranty, the dealer changed out the Mercron and installed Mercron V to correct the problem.
The way I understand the Mercon deal is Mercon 3 and Dexron 2 are identical. Mercon 5 is an improved version of Mercon 3 basically a synthetic with really good additive package. You can replace Mercon 3 with Mercon 5 but must drain the system completely, NOT mix the 2 fluids. That is what we do at the L-M dealership that I work. We used to add an additive called "Lube Gard" {non Ford} to the Mercon 3 that was reccommended by Ford at a service meeting a few years ago for the previously mentioned "shudder" that the AODE/4R70W was having. We don't see as many of them as we used to. I understand the Mercon 5 has all the additive bases covered.
