I have a 95 F150 5.0 Manual w/126k on it. I have Warn Hubs that work fine. The problem is when I shift from 2H to 4H (4x4)(stopped & in neutral) it will sometimes be normal and other times makes a horrible "grinding"? sound, it will also pull me all over the road. It also will do this when I shift back to 2H, stopped & in neutral. Any guesses or help? thks
check your t-case fluid....it may be real low and the gears are getting dry. Also do you drive around in 4x4 a lot? I would lock my hubs w/o the t-case in 4x4 just to get everything greased up again!
I would also think about jacking up all the tires off the ground and see if you can still hear the grinding!

I'd thought about low fluid too for the noise but I can't make any sense of why it pulls and jerks. Almost makes me think it's engaging low and high at the same time.
What about a seized spider gear - My 80 is doing the same thing and I don't quite know either. I crawled uder yesterday and found that the passenger side shaft spins freely , the drivers side spins about a 1/4 turn each way and that's it.
It is a shift NOT a push button. Fluid eh? Now where does a girl check for a level or where?? I have no idea what a spider gear is, but the rearend was rebuilt 2-3 yrs ago??
I would get a manual with pictures to show you where to check the transfer case fluid - there are two plugs on the back of your transfer case, an upper and a lower. To check the fluid use a 3/8" socket extension to remove the top plug and fill to the level of that plug.
I think you have two separate problems - the grinding and the pulling.
Have you tried driving with the hubs locked and the transfer case in 2WD? Does it still pull?
You could also have a bad hub - if only one side locks in you will definitely feel a pull on acceleration.

click on the first pic....that is your axle, it is an exploded view....spider gears are called side gears here and the numbers are 4236 and 4215. basically a spider gear lets your axle spin at different speeds going around turns. = http://www.autozone.com/servlet/UiBr...3d800a49a3.jsp
hope that helps

Thank you all for your suggestions. In reference to the locked hubs and driving in 2WD, yes this has been done. It does "seem" like it is not "transferring". The pull is not there in 4WD, or 2WD just when I shift from 4WD to 2WD, seems strange to me. Thank you for the links to the pics Jason, super info!! And yes the clutch is being used when shifting from each. : ) But I will try the double clutch to see if it makes a difference.
