Two weeks ago I installed a pair of Panasonic 6 1/2" door speakers in a 1991 F150 4X4 standard cab. They sounded alot better than the old speakers and I decided to order an Alpine CDA-9805 HU to get more watts and have a CD player. I got all of the above from Crutchfield so the harnesses came with the speakers and HU.
I double checked all my wiring on the Alpine before putting it in. and figured I had it right. I'm not getting much control in balancing the left and right speakers. They do fade some when I go all the way left or right, sounding the loudest in the middle, but there's still too much sound coming from the speaker that I've turned the balancer away from.
I thought there should be no sound coming from that one. The balancer worked fine on the factory cassette deck after I installed the speakers.
Only the door speakers are hooked up to the right and left front leads. When I use the fade control, it seems to work right, no sound at all if I move the fade all the way to rear speakers.
The speakers sound right with as much bass as can be expected for what they are. Pretty sure I have them in polarity. Kind of stumped on what I did wrong. Thanks, Bill.
Go back and check the speaker wiring. It sounds like you have them crossed. Check the wiring color codes on the alpine unit with the ford codes. If you used a pre-wired connector thru crutchfield, it should be right but there is still the possiblility.
I called Crutchfield tech support and told him the problem with the balance control. He couldn't come up with anything other than the Alpine HU might be defective and sent a replacement out that same day. I put it in yesterday and that wasn't it, same thing with the new one. Since the fader did work the right way,(no sound from the door speakers when I adjusted the fader all the way to the rear), I wired the right door speaker to the right rear speaker lead from the Alpine. That didn't help either, still too much sound coming from the speaker I turn the adjustment away from.
The wiring diagrams on installdr.com don't match the same color or wire layout attached to the factory speaker harness on my '91 XLT. On the factory harness connector behind the radio, there are two black w/white tracer wires that go to the doors. When I plugged in the Crutchfiled speaker harness at the door, that black and white wire would then be a negative as it attaches to the smaller terminal on the speakers. I can't believe I got two bad CD players, it's got to be wiring, but I've wired that thing seven ways from Sunday, trying different combinations and still can't get the balance right.
Any suggestions would be appreciated, maybe I'm overlooking something simple...or just doing it wrong.
