I got an 87 xlt 4wd auto I had a hole in the oil pan due to loose motor mounts broke a couple of bolts putting a new timing chain in it Got a bad IAC and had to clean the MAP sensor. At the bottom of the air intake the elbow was all rotten.Hole in the floor on the drivers side.Brake lites didn"t work due to a loose wire in the steering coloum.Replaced brakes all the way around ,changed rear axle seal new muffler and tail pipe and replaced hanger bearing other than that no problem
Hey, Rockranger. My buddy's 90 Ranger has a thing with the left brake light not working sometimes. He has to wiggle the turn signal switch a bit to make it work. Try that on yours to see what happens.
83 Ranger 4x4. I use it to plow snow in the winter. I've had the transmission out 4 times and the engine 3. Replaced the tranny (C-5) , rear main seal, timing gears and countless u-joints. But it is being used to push snow, so I shouldn't complain too much. The brakes keep locking up when plowing, had them apart a dozen times, and had to replace a rotor and bearings not too long ago because the rotor got so hot, the lug bolts loosened up in the rotor. Had to cut each one off to get the wheel off, because the lug nuts just spun. While doing that, I saw that the upper ball joints are shot too. Other than that (except for the rusted out floor pan on the drivers side) it's a great plow truck!
i have an 89 ranger xlt and have put a 89 bronco II motor in it and have redone the driveshaft, tranny, and valve cover gaskets. most of the rebuid was do to my grandfather, who owned the truck before me, getting ripped off at a shop. but its a great little truck and will still be here after these 2004 rangers are dead and gone.

I've got a 1987 4x4 2.9l as well. So far I've replaced the rear brakes, the valve lifters, and fashioned a shifter out of a piece of tubing and a bolt. That's it. Tears through the Goldsboro, NC snow!
I have a 1986 Supercab 4x4 automatic.
Before i bought it (amonth ago) the owner had replaced u joints, rotors, driveshaft ends and the fuel pump, and fixed the tranny. Now the gasket under the valve cover is leaky a little... the floor is rusted out... bad stuff.
i have a 84 4x4 ranger and im gettin a 85 2x4 ranger here soon for my friend were goin to work on them to get em running and use them as off-roaders and we need help with them
I have an '88 single cab long bed, 2.5 four cylinder. I paid $350 for it at a tow truck yard that I used to work for. It was what we call a "stolen recovery" vehicle. It has 196K on the od. It had no keys when I got it. I replaced the ignition, and door locks. Put new wires and plugs, rotor & cap and air cleaner in. I'm gettin' ready to change the fuel filter next and the PCV valve. I noticed when changing the plugs that the head cover is smudging w/ oil. Probably the gasket is bad. Another job for another day. Need to check the brakes all the way around. Plan on making it a daily driver as soon as "little things" are complete and registration is finished. Around 80 miles a day is the commute. Looking forward to the gas savings with prices the way the are today.
