1st Truck

Hello, this is my first vehicle i have ever owned. It is a 1999 Ford Ranger manual 5 speed with 170,000 miles on it. My dad had used it for a work truck so he always kept the oil changed and everything running on it good. I don't know too much about trucks but am always willing to learn. I wanted to know what i can do to always get the most out of running my truck. Such as Oil changed, tires inflated air filters, (clutch fluid?) etc.
Thanks
-Phil

clean air filter, fuel filter, change oil and filter, timing belt, keep tires properly inflated etc... just a few, but it's a start.

Oh.... well, i usually check the air filter say every 6000 miles, or if I am going on a trip, I always check it or get a new one before a leave (course remember that this will change due to your driving conditions, ie if you are driving in a place that is constantly dusty, it would be a good idea to check/change it every 3k). Fuel filter, I change about 30-40, unless you start noticing a lack of power (seems like the motor isnt getting the proper amount of fuel). Timing belt should be changed about every 100k. I usually check the tires ATLEAST once a month (i shoot for about 30-32psi) or before I leave on a trip. Course you wanna change the oil and filter every 3-4k (once again, depending on your driving conditions).

Your best bet would be to get a washable filter, instead of buying a new one every 5k miles. A little more money, but they are guaranteed to last as long as your engine (well at least K&N are). Also check the coolant level, and color. If it isnt bright green, flush it. Just NEVER run it low on coolant. Thats the quickest way to blow a motor. Same with oil, check once a week or at LEAST once every other week. And rotate tires when you change the oil.

Just pay attention when you drive it. It will tell you if everything is ok by the way it drives. IF You notice little changes in sound or performance, something might need checked.

in my ranger bood it said the fluid in a manual tran should last the life of the truck. so i wouldn't worry about changing it uless you get some high performance fluid, but it is a good idea to check it.

You should check/change the tranny fluid for reason that perhaps the person who had it before may have driven it through high water (water+tranny fluid=problems). Yes, you should also do the wires and plugs, I forgot to add that one in there earlier.

Well it's been a while since i check this post but i've had it bookmarked. I summed all of the posts up into this:

Air filter
6,000

Fuel filter
30-40,000 if lack of power (not enough fuel to engine)

Timing belt
100,000

Tire inflation
once a month

Oil filter/oil
3-4,000

Spark Plugs/Wires
?

Transmission Fluid
Lifetime on truck, unless high performance fluid is needed.

Coolant
Not bright Green? Flush it

Tire Rotation
60,000 (what good year employee's told me)

**Never run on low coolant or oil. Easiest way to blow an engine
**water+tranny fluid=problems

Would anyone else like to add anything??

FWIW, a lot of the information you need can be found in the 1999 Rangers Owner's Manual, and more particularly, in the Scheduled Maintenance Guide. You might want to use the information in the Manual and Guide as a starting point, and then from there you can further consider the tips that people have to offer around here.
