Thumbs up "97" Ranger 4.0 (Splash) exhaust

Does anyone know why JBA headers is so expensive versus say Hedmann or another brand? I'm looking for better performance and mileage. I have installed K&N performance filter & a Jet performance chip. These helped my performance, but I haven't seen much in mileage increase. My exhaust is in need of replacement and I'm thinking of installing headers and stainless duals. My truck has a 4" lift and 33x10 Mickey Thompson's. The truck has 85000mi. Living in Michigan I think I can do away with the converter and install a performance exhaust. Any answers?

Welcome to FTE!

A good exhaust system should help, especially with the mods you already have. Gibson and Flowmaster are popular choices for the Ranger, but their are some other quality brands, as well.

Interesting, I would have thought that Michigan would have strict emissions standards...

Sell your Jet Chip and get a Diablo Chip from motorhaven, it is a much better product. I love my Gibson exhaust, helped quite a bit. I want headers next. Is the K&N you got a FIPK or just the replacement filter. If it was just a filter, you can gain some top end by switching to a Cold Air Intake, and if it was FIPK, then you might want to rig up a heat sheild to insulate intake air from the underhood engine heat. Results in colder air, which is denser, so basically more air. The intake combined with a good exhaust will give you good power gains. Don't expect huge MPG gains. I have maybe gained 1-2 highway, and 2-3 city, but unless I keep the truck for half a million miles, it will never make up the difference I paid for the mods, especially running premium fuel.

Cold Air filter by K&N

I put the cold air filter system on my 4.0. Seems to help Top End. The Jet chip has shown some performance increase. What makes the other brand better? I'm checking with Borla exhaust to see if they make a full exhaust system for the Ranger.

Borla or Gibson doesn't make a ss dual exhaust system for a "97" Ranger, so I ordered the Flowmaster Cat Backs.

I have a '94 Splash with the 4.0 V6. I have a K & N, a chip, straight flowmasters, a 70mm throttle body made by Street & Performance, 8.8 mm Taylor wires, MSD Blaster coil, milled heads, and a 3 angle valve job....It runs pretty good.......LMAO
