carrier compatibility

Anyone know if I can take a ford 9in carrier from a 66 f100 and put it in an 81 F100 9in? Both trucks are 2wd. Thanks, j66b

You would have to verify the axel spline to be sure. It will bolt in but also look where
the grease fill fitting is. some have it on the housing and some have it on the carrier.

I bet the older one is a 28 spline. Most of these trucks are 31 spline. You can change the spider gears to fit the axles, but the 31 spline axle has a larger diameter and won't fit through the hole in the 28 spline carrier. You can take it to a machine shop and let them open it up.
