I pulled out the carrier on my front 76 Dana 60 axle for a 4x4 to replace the inner axle seals, and I was ready for the carrier to be really hard to pull out, from what I have heard. While snugging up the straps to try to ratchet it out, the carrier fell out. Did anyone else have the carrier come out so easily? This seems extremely loose by what I have read. The race on one side is ugly, and the other bearing just fell of the carrier. I believe they are supposed to be pressed into place. I am planning on replacing both bearings, but I want to make sure the carrier is adjusted correctly when I reinstall it. Anyone have information on the correct way to check, and adjust the carrier on installation? Thanks
They're not really pressed in there, they just spread the case so that the carrier fits in there snugly. As for specs, get some gear marking compound and use your original settings as a starting spot. It was probably loose because your bearings weren't tight anymore
