In response to this emblem question, I believe the 4x2 and 4x4 badges were for 85's & 86's only. The '84 I used to have was a standard trim, not XL, XLT, or XLT Lariat. It did not have any holes for any emblems, the only thing in that location was a dealer sticker. I have a friend who has a '86 F-150 standard 4x4 and his has the 4x4 badge under the F-150 badge. That's why I think it was only for the 85 and 86's.
I agree on the 85 and 6 4x2 and 4x4 emblem, I will wager the emblems went hole less in 84, which is when they became plastic and were held on with adhesive no use for holes, 83's and older had steel badges with nuts or clips on the backside, thus the need for 2 holes
83 and older had steel "custom" scripts there to I think also the F100 script in 83 and older, Bronco had a long steel badge, not sure what the 86 bronco has tho, I was just working on one too last weekend, oh well I will see it again this weekend I'll check it
In 86 ford put the 4x2 on the fender instead of putting"custom".Usally it means that you have the base trim level without the deisel engine. In 87 they put custon under the fbadge and put the 4x2 under the drivers headlight dropped it alltogether in 88 and went to EFI
