They put them there because they put the holes in all the fenders. If you had a cheap 2wd truck you got the 2x4 emblem, but if you got a 2wd XL, XLT, or Lariat, you got that emblem there instead. If you got 4x4, you got the 4x4 emblem, but that was removed for the XL, XLT, or Lariat emblem on the more expensive models.
Dosn't mean it's an XLT. If it was, it'd have it on the dash and everything too, not to mention the nicer interior with woodgrain, chrome trim, cloth seats, full door panels, headliner, carpet, ect...
Many options on the higher models could be had without actually buying the higher model.
86 didnt have holes in the fender for locating the badges either, not all trucks have an emblem under the model designation, the plastic overdrive emblem on the tailgate was kinda cheesey too, the metal electronic fuel injection was ok, and nice when coupled with the chrome and red tailgate applique on XLT trucks

My 86 has holes in the fenders for the 4x4 emblem. I've had my truck from 88 and it still has original paint, so I KNOW it's original. The one emblem was coming loose, I had to retape it on, that's how I know it has the 2 holes.
