Dana 60 limited slip swap

I just installed a Dana 60 rear under my 78 F250 4x4. My old axle has a limited slip setup. I want to install the limited slip into my new Dana 60 rear. How difficult of a process is this?

Also this will be used as a plow truck in Alaska. How will the front and rear limited slip help or hinder the operation on snow/ice?

Cheers!

Chubby,
You will have to remove your carrier and ring gear from your old and new axles,(USE MARKING GREASE AND CHECK YOUR MESH PATTERN BETWEEN THE R&P ON YOUR NEW AXLE BEFORE REMOVING THE RING GEAR),this will give you a refference later.then remove and swap the old LSD carrier assembly from the old ring gear and install it onto your new ring gear.Make sure to mark your bolt clamps side to side and up and down so you can replace them excactly as they were on the new axle.Make sure to use the new ring gear when reinstalling as the Ring and pinions were matched to begin with.Changing the carrier should not change your R&P set up and you may get lucky and not have to re-shim the pre load or back lash. After reinstalling and torquing to spec use marking grease and re-check the mesh pattern. If they match what they were to begin with you will be good to go.If they were either poorly matched to begin with or poorly mathed after the re install you will need to purhace a rebuild kit and follow the instructions through the whole process. Most of the time though, if it was set up correctly in the first place and it is fairly new,you will not have to readjust the shims. Many factory LSDs require friction reducer agents in the gear oil, check with your orriginal owners manual or contact Dana to make sure,(they wont index corrctly without it,and can ruin the clucth surfaces of the LSD). I would think you should be very pleased with the LSD for your puposes as long as they are working correctly.I used the factory LSD in my 91 F250 for years in the deep snow above Lake Tahoe,Nv. it always worked exceptionaly.I was open in the front but the added traction of an LSD I think would be awsome.
On my other post you could be right about the Dana 60 in the rear of my 77 F250 ,but Im almost certain it was a Ford 9",the Dana 60 I beleive was the Heavier Duty Option,I know I replaced the destroyed rear with a Dana 60 at an extra cost from the dealer as it was still under warranty.
If you run into problems with the LSD swap, post it or E-mail me and ill give you some of the tips Ive been using on set ups,(Ive done 5 of them this summer, all Dana's,with the help and use of the shop and tools of a very good mechanic)and they are all still working so far.The swap will be much, much easier if you have access to put your truck on a hoist.Later,
Jeff
