i got a quick "i wonder why" question. i as reading in my owners manual the other day that only the manual trans trucks have a voltmeter guage in the instrument cluster. why is that. my truck is an auto and i dont have one.
Mine doesn't have a stock gayge either so I bought a cheap digital voltmeter that plugs into the cigarette lighter or auxillary power port.
Made by Vector and sold at Auto Zone.
Ford decided that automatic transmission owners with the PSD or V10 needed a transmission temp gauge. So on those trucks the voltmeter had to give up it's precious dash space and was replaced with an idiot light. The only problem is that the tranny temp gauge is about as useless as an idiot light. An accurate tranny temp gauge is one of the most popular upgrades for these trucks. Ford should have either spec'd an accurate tranny temp gauge or left the voltmeter where it was. Just my opinion.
i would have rather seen a voltmetr gauge as well, i dont tow anything heavy just a 17 ft ski boat so im sure that the tranny isnt gonna get that hot. but hey ford knows best right!!!!
I got a Volt gauge to match my other Autometer gauges - I figured an idiot light for voltage isn't gonna help much. I didn't realize the manual trans. did have one - I'd rather have that in the dash than that crappy tranny temp. My friend FRIED his tranny in his PSD superduty with 1500 miles on it (some defect from factory) and his stock tranny gauge still never showed hot!! Now what kinda gauge it THAT??
i suppose if you could get a manual instrument panel from the auto wreckers you could replace it instead of buying aftermarket guages, but i think ford should just make one style and be done with it, who needs a tranny temp guage anyways, if your tranny is gonna break its gonna break. JMO.
