Hey Y'all. newbie here. I have found many solutions for repairing my '79 f150 in these forums, thanks to all who share info. Now I have a question I can't find the answer to in the archives.
My question concerns the installation of an alternator belt on a stock 460. My truck is a '79 4x2 supercab with ac and power steering. The crankshaft has three pulleys on it, the inner pulley, closest to the block, drives the alt belt. The middle and outer pulleys line up with two pulleys on the water pump to drive AC and PS. My problem is I can't get the alt belt to fit between the middle/outer crankshaft and water pump pulleys. The clearence between them is only about 1/4 in. So before I start trying to cram the belt through with a screwdriver, I need to know if there is a better way to install the alternator belt. Thanks
Ya its a tight fit but ya should be able to work it in there easily. Are you sure you have the right belt? If so Ya might have to pull the fan Off so the pully will be loose although Ive never had to do it that way.
Good Luck
I bought a Dayton belt at PepBoys, whichever one the computer said would fit. It looks thicker than the one that was on there, but seems to be the same length.
Just had the exact same problem on my '77. It took a few minutes of back & forth wiggling but it did go on without removing the fan. And yes it was also a Dayton replacement belt. So it will go on. Just gotta be patient.

Turns out I had to undo the four water pump pulley bolts and take the fan off to gain enough clearance to slide the alt belt between the pulleys. Loosening the WP pulley also gave me the slack I needed to install the power steering pump belt too. I discovered my Ford II power steering pump will not slide in as far as its bracket should allow because a metal fuel pump line is in the way. So..I installed the new belts, adjusted tenision, and test drove, Everything seems fine so far. An intermitant vibration problem appears to have cleared up too, but I'll have to drive the Green Beast for a couple a days before I take that off my fix it list. Thanks for all y'all's help, I've saved hundreds of dollars in repair bills with the info I've found in this forum.
You know we get at least one user every day tho that cusses us out because we won't let them post an ad, or cuss, or they don't like the way it is organized, or we don't let them post pics in the threads, etc etc etc. Many times they have an example of a board that is run "properly" that has maybe a hundred users...
