Drum brake diagram

I recently purchased a roller 1960 f100 and am working on fixing the brake system. I took the drums off to find that none of them have the "self-adjusting" pieces of newer models. Additionally, LMC doesn't have those components for a 1960. Am I missing these pieces or are they not available for a 1960? If not, can I upgrade easily to a later year with self adjusting brakes?

My 60 did not have adjustable. Most people upgrade to disk brakes

Nope!
57-60 didn't have em'.
don't think they came out on the F trucks til bout63 or4'
least not til then on the econolines.either
not a big deal to manually adjust anyhows.... just make a habit of doing it whenever you do your oil changes.

can you give a quick rundown on how to manually adjust the brakes?

welllll!
brake adj is pretty simple on em'
right at the bottom of the drum backing plates you'll see an oval shaped hole.
perhaps with a rubber plug in it, but usually that plug is long lost.
....perhaps I'm getting ahead of myself here, pop off the drum and kinda get a handle on the lay of the land in there see the little "daisy wheel" for lack of a better term on the threaded pushy outy thing (adjuster asm.) at the very bottom that kinda seems to be pushing the brake shoes apart. first make sure the daisy wheel turns reasonably freely & that it's not seized. the special tool kinda a pryer sorta a thing is pretty cheap way to make the job go better, it has the right angles in it to pry at the daisy wheel for maximum turn per pry. usually these tools are on that little tree type display @ the auto parts store y'know the one that has door crank removers, test lites, rearview mirror block reglue kits, usually get one for about 15 bucks or less.
anyhow fiddle around with prying the daisy wheel with the drum off to get a feel for moving the adjuster, just make sure it's back where you found it before you go to slide the drum back on, else you won't get the drum back over the shoes.
once the drum is back on, using the tool pry(turn) the adjuster until just a bit past where you hear the shoes touching the drum. you don't wanna feel much friction between them do all 4 wheels equally and that's pretty much it. when you apply the pedal after this procedure you usually'll find that your pedal is a bit higher up and a nice firm feel to it. word of caution though.... on the 1st initial test drive make sure that you hold onto the wheel nice n' tight incase the brakes decide to pull one way or nuther' .....if they do it's back to the drawing board & try n' adjust the pull out of it.

hope this helps

Even with all of the highly technical terminology like "pushy outy thing," "pryer sorta thing," and "fiddle around", I found that to be a highly accurate and helpful post. Thanks Mikey!
