Self Adjuster Cable Guide

This is probably a stupid question, but it might keep me from making a stupid mistake. I put sterling in my truck and someone took all the self-adjuster stuff off. I bought a kit to put them back on and I am curious about the cable guide. I am use to the half moon guide shown in fig. 2 and the kit has a guide fig. 1. We use to hold the half moon guide in with a spring thru the center. How do you hold the guide in fig. 1 in? Do you bend the tabs over after putting it into the shoe or does it just sit there on its own?

The plate the shoe is attached to should have two holes that the two tabs go into. Then it's just a matter of bending the tabs around to the back side of the shoe plate to hold them in place. The "snugger" you get them installed, the longer they'll stay put.

I figured that would be what you would have to do, but never dealing with these things before made me wonder. I asked the guys at a couple of parts stores and they didn’t have a clue. I didn’t want to ask a brake shop, they might give bad advice just out of spite. I guess that you will have to get new ones every time you do a brake job. Thanks for responding.

I just did the brakes on my '97 F350 and had to replace one of the cable guides for the first time. One of the tabs finally broke off and the guide fell down between the shoe and drum and squealed like a cut cat, making me think the shoes were wore out. That guide has been installed on several sets of shoes over the last 18 years and it's the only one I've ever had break off on any of my one tons.

Due to that one failing, I'll pay more attention to clues of fatiguing tabs from now on.

I notice all the parts houses keep them in stock. I don't think I would take a chance and put old one back on new shoes. Things could get messy if one broke off and that cable started wrapping up inside. I have no idea what year this rear end is. It has the speedometer ring so someone told me it has to be a 89 or later. It does have the long pinon and large yoke.

I had to order the ones I got. Mike (parts dude at NAPA) said they don't stock 'em cause nobody buys them around here. I ordered a box full (5 I think). Guess all of us in the southeast pinch penny's too much!
