I used to be quite active in the sport. Started jumping in 1972 with old military gear. About 600 jumps now-D5159, SCR, SCS, Life member of USPA. Unfortunately because of my job and my location, it is really tough to make a jump. Really miss the drop zones. Last time I jumped was 1998 in Texas.
1 tandem to get acquainted, 1 freefall from 12,500' with 2 jumpmasters. Wish I could take it up but a little pricey and now I got a baby. Sure dug it though.
Originally posted by 94van I never jumped, but flew a jump plane for a few years. Never could figure out why folks jump out of a perfectly good airplane. LOL
Probably the best reason for jumping out of a perfectly good airplane was they weren't "perfectly good"! I have about 300 hours of flying jumpers from 172s, 180s, 182s and a few others. I was sure glad to have that parachute strapped to my back knowing how "unperfect" most of the planes were. I think the sport has certainly improved since then.
You must have been in the "non-jumping" Army. Was that when they became the "Army of one"? Whatever that is supposed to be. I still haven't figured out how you can have an Army of ONE.
I had the offer to skydive strapped to someone over 10 years ago. A friend talked me into it. The only problem was my work. So, I begged and begged to get that day off, and was denied.
Today, I slap myself, I lossed the opportunity, especially at a younger risk taking age. I should of just kissed off my job, being that I was only 18 or so. My friend got a video tape of the whole jump.
I then passed off another opp, when I was invited to spend a month in France. Of course, they were stuck there for 3 months due to Visa issues. Now that I'm older, I cannot afford that trip, due to responsibilities. And with the skydiving, I think of my family, and couldn't try it this time.
My friend told me skydiving gave him the biggest rush he's ever had. Smacking myself for not going.
