I guess i've never used the wire type gappers or the circular types for setting gaps, I usually use my trusty feeler gauges and use the gappers to adjust the gap.

No, never use the blade type of feeler gauges for gapping plugs,
the "wire" type is much better....

With the blade type of gauge, you have to hold the blade perfectly parallel to the electrodes (especially the GND electrode) to get an accurate gap, which can be difficult. With the wire type of gauge, this is not a problem.
I have a wire type, with 4 or 5 wires around a circular metal sandwich holder. They are all too small for todays wider gaps. I use a feeler gauge, though I know that it is not as accurate. But, I bet that it is a lot better than doing nothing, and trusting the gaps on plugs out of the box. THe mfg generallly have a range of gaps, i.e. .042-.046 and I figure that if I use reasonable care, a flat feeler gauge will work just fine. I mean, that is a .004 gap, and we don't get the side electrodes bent exactly parallel to the flat of the center electrode, anyway.
Just my opining on ether...
