i bought a 72 f250 4x4 a few weeks back i was told it was a 361 with a steel crank (not forged) the person said it did'nt have the same firing order as a fe (352,360,390 ect.) besides firing order is there anyway i can find out what i have?
A lot of conflicting info!! The 361 is a FT engine with a forged crank and larger front snout. I have a few casting #'s for the FT try posting head, intake casting #. I can't find anything about diff firing orders? How many valve cover bolts?
With the different firing order, it sounds like it might be the 351W. Not sure why Ford gave it a different firing order than its smaller brother, the 302.
Like the previous poster said, give us a valve cover bolt count, and someone should be able to narrow it down to at least an engine family.
I've heard two stories for the changed firing order. One is that the 7-8 encouraged crossfire and burned exhaust valves. The other is the 1-5 hits the first rod journal hard enough to eventually crack it. Funny the FE's had no problem.
I could maybe understand the cross-fire issue, but I don't buy the crank breakage on 1-5 as being an issue on the FE/302 firing order. The 351W firing order is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8. Wouldn't crank breakage be a concern just the same on 4-8?
i have never seen the h.d. truck engine in a light truck before.but there was never any reason why you couldn,t.it will indeed have a forged crank and a lot of other h.d.parts.it will have pulling power rather than speed.low comp, heads small valves etc.i have never heard of a different firing order.
the 361 if thats what you have is a heavy duty version of the 360 which means it should be one tough engine. it was probably transplanted from a f350 or more.
Originally posted by BB Krewat, the 302 firing order changed in '82 when Ford dropped in the 2V Marine cam into the 5.0 H.O. Tha cam was almost 10 years old!
(Sorry Sean for all the small block talk)
I've had some experience in the marine side of things, and I think they used the 351W cam in the marine motors for power, low-end, something, hence why I said they dropped the 351W cam in the 5.0HO... taking a verbal shortcut...
That "marine 302 cam" with the weird firing order was a 351W cam from the get go... I think
We're all talking rumors here anyway... I'll shut up now
Look on the intake manifold for the firing order. If it's 15426378 you could have an FE or FT. Additionally, look at where the crank snout sticks out of the block. If the block extends below the centerline of the crank, you've probably got an FE or FT.
thanks for all the input guys i have to dig it out after work today
,got hammered last nite with snow, good thing i have my 67' f250
walks right thur that $*#@, i'll post my findings tonite
