remove air pump from 90 5.0?

Hi y'all!

I just have a quick question... could I remove the air pump from a 90 5.0L and not replace it? Just get a shorter belt? At least, could I do this in a pinch, until I can find a used part? Want to get back to work fast as possible

Thanks,
walter

yes, yes you can.

If this is on a Mustang, most guys do it to free up some HP.

Remove the pump and toss a shorter belt on.

Thanks a lot brother!

It's for an F250, but it could use the horses anyway.

Thanks again...

I think some guys also leave the pump on and just bypass it...not sure though.

Removing the air pump from a vehicle with catalytic converters will cause the converters to plug up and overheat.

Don't do it.

I don't think that will be a problem. Air is not injected 100% of the time. And what about all the vehicles with 3 way cats that don't have air injection? They all work fine without air.

I have noticed that some outfits offer an idler pulley and mounting bracket set to enable removal of the air pump and still use the stock serpentine belt. I assumed this mean't that a shorter serpentine belt was not available.

Anyone got a part number for such a shorter belt?

(for a 1990 302 with power steering but will not have the air pump installed).

Thanks,

I ended up just slapping another air pump in because I couldn't find a short enough belt. Cost of new short belt + cost of discarded newish belt = cost of air pump. So I figured, what's the difference (a few horses I guess).

Definitely runs better without the pulley siezed up
