Hey everyone, I know this is not a truck, but I know there is alot of knowledge out there. My father in-law has a 96' ford windstar and just the other day the speedo needle started jumping when he was cruising about 55mph and it shot up to 90 then down to 40mph. I did some research, but could'nt find much on this issue. I was wondering if the speed sensor on the transaxle is bad or a gear on the cable???? I don't know. If there is anybody out there who has had this problem or can give me some hints on what to look for, I would greatly appreciate it, so I can get toa fixin. Thanx for the help in advance. Has a 3.8L and no code has been given. Rich
I have a 1996 Ford windstar that did the exact same thing for 2 years, I finally bought a used spedometer off of one of the auction sites and put it in, only took about 45 minutes and has been fine since.
It fixed the problem fine, I also went from a GL spedometer (fuel, temp and spedo.) to an LX speedometer (tach, spedo, low washer fluid, low fuel, etc.) After I did a cruise control install I found out that Ford puts in the same wiring harness in the GL as the LX, hence everything is plug and play.
