Driveline Vibration

Driveline Vibration
I'm a Ford Service Manager, and have read several post about vibration 45-60 mph. I have work with my personal 04 F150 for a month now, swaping tires, wheels, shocks, none of these items changed the vibration. At this point I am working with 2 different
companies that are fabracating a new driveshaft, I should have the results by 02/20/04, and will gladly post my findings.
Last week I ordered a new driveshaft from Ford and sent it to a local shop to be checked, it was way out of spec, after this myself and staff starting working on another solution, at this point I know we are on the right track. Again I will post findings as well as giving other Ford dealers the fix, I'm 99.9% sure this will do it.

Just want to let you know that my 2004 F-150 also had a vibration at 50-60 mph and it stayed in the shop for 10 days before the dealership found out the problem. They changed the tires, the driveshaft etc.. etc.,. A Ford rep. came to the dealership and installed vibration sensors with test equipment and found the problem to be in the rear diff.. Removed the rear diff cover and checked backlash on every third tooth and found spec to be .009-015. Spec is .004. Pulled center carrier and ring gear and checked carrier runout, found .0019-----spec is .0012. Replaced rear bearings and set to factory spec. and this repaired the vibration problem. Truck at the time of repairs had 2698 miles on it. This truck drives like a dream now. So far now with almost 4000 miles on it, can't report any other problems. Very happy with this new ride.

I also have the driveline vibration. Mine is pretty subtle, but noticable from about 40mph up to 65, then also upon deceleration to about 30 mph. My dealer just called me this A.M. to say that "we have a tech service bulletin about this, and need to send out for a vibration supression kit". WTF is that???? Perhaps Ford is putting together a tier 1 kit to address the problem. He didnt know what was in the kit, but Ill inform you all when I find out.
By the way... ...this truck rocks!

Keep the information comming...!!! Knowledge is Power...!! My service dept. seems to working with me to resolve my vabration problems but ,as of last week, they seemed to running out of solutions..
There have been plenty of times I wished I had held off buying till all the "bugs" were worked out....but if not for this maddening vibration, it is quite possible that this is the nicest truck I have ever driven.

How much of a vibration are we talking about? I have on occasion felt a very subtle "shimmy" around those speeds. Very subtle. Usually happens about the same time I experience the hesitation in the gas pedal. Seems like the transmission is expecting more acceleration and is in too high a gear for the rpm's.
Anyone know how difficult it would be to have the "drive by wire" replaced with a regular throttle cable setup? Would this cause problems for the computer? I'm thinking about doing some performance mods but it seems sensless if the engine is going to have a delayed reaction to the gas pedal.

I’ve been reading this forum for a few months about this 45 to 65 mph vibration problem.
I just got back from my Ford Dealer a few hours ago. I’ve waited for 3 months to meet with a Ford Factory Rep. about this vibration problem with my truck. The Rep claims the vibration is normal yes normal for a Ford 04 or even an older model, and will not do any more authorized work on to fix my “vibration concerns”
I did not pay for a new Ford truck to vibrate under my #$$. I traded a 9 year old Dodge Ram that did not vibrate this much with 150,000+ miles on it.
His only suggestions were live with it; go to the Ford Dispute Settlement Board or my states Limon Law.
I’ve got my papers filled out tonight requesting a refund.
