If it will also start with a light touch on the throttle I'd guess a bad idle air control valve. See if Autozone will check for trouble codes. Have you checked for any vacuum leaks? If you hook up a vac guage you should get at least 18 inches.

does it smoke(black) when it finally fires? could have flooding problem when you floor it computer goes into flood mode & doens't pulse injectors. a bad tps will do the same thing but should turn on engine light. if it isn't flooding could be bad check valve in fuel pump do a fuel pressure leak down test to confirm this or try cycling key about 3 times to fully pressurize fuel system if it is bad valves in pump it probably won't set codes. good luck!!

Ranger idle at 1000 rpm
removed IAC plug
idle goes to 500 or less
Is this normal?
Does it tell me IAC is working properly?

When you pull the IAC electrical connector the engine should either stall or just barey stay idling, which seems to be the situation in your case.
So, it doesn't sound like your IAC would be causing the problem with the hard starts.
