thanks for all the advise guys! mission accomplished. I vented at the shrader valve, didn't feel any pressure or fuel release though. With the proper tool the lines popped right off the filter. I'm going to cut the old filter open just to actually how dirty it was as it looks original (90K+miles). The fram relplavement was a perfect fit, hopefully the same quality (said china on it, boo hiss)

I just gotta vent about this. The fuel filter on these Ford trucks are almost impossible to change without rolling in gas. It is only slightly more intelligent a design than the old Chevette that you had to remove the AC compressor on to do a tune up (and that's debateable). The only decent thing about it is that it is a big filter so you don't need to change it often. If they had moved mine forward a few inches, it would have been easy to get to and change without having to lay under it with one hand wedged between the tank and the frame.
