My 98 XLT 4wd has a noise that sound just like worn break pads.
I replaced the front rotors and pads expecting to cure the problem but the noise is still there. I know it has something to do with the drivetrain because the frequency changes with speed not RPM. The rear pads/rotors are fine, I had them replaced last year. I have 150,000+ miles and need to get many more.
It could be front wheel bearing.I just had mine replaced yesterday.IF the sound changes when you turn the steering wheel as you are driving,it's a good indication of the bearing. This comes as a hub assembly with bearing and abs sensor on the 4x4's.The noise started around 35mph and was real loud at arouind45mph.
Hope this helps.Good luck.
I can't remember if the '98 had a mechanism for disengaging the front drivetrain, but I almost don't think so. You might check the CV joints on the axleshafts and the u-joints on the driveshaft.
