I have a 00 with manual hubs. A freind of mine explained to me that the trucks with auto locking hubs lock in by vaccum and that there are vaccum ports on the front of my brake calipers that go directly to my hubs. He said that I can tie into a vaccum hose run a line into a vaccum solinoid, then to the caliper port and add a cab mounted switch to activate the solinoid and that it will engage my hubs.... THAT WOULD BE WAYYY COOL..I am going to investigate this further.. anybody else heard of this???
Sounds like a cool project. See if it'll work with the manual hubs. Hopefully you won't have to change a bunch of stuff out. Let us all know what you come up with.
Yep, all 4wd trucks have the vacuum ports whether you have ESOF or not. I'm not sure if the hub locks for the manual tc trucks have the rubber boot thingy in them or not. Just hook a vacuum pump up to the port and see if it will hold a vacuum. Ford says it should hold a 15 in-hg vacuum for 30 seconds without leaking down more than .50 in-hg. Also, if you decide to go ahead with your plan, they use a vacuum sequence to engage and disengage the hubs. A high vacuum level is used to engage the hubs and a lower vacuum level is used to disengage the hubs. The vacuum is only applied for 30 seconds or so and then released. Be sure to post a detailed report and take lots of pictures if you do it.
Soooo What's the point??? Why don't you just lock your hubs in and leave em' that way till you get home it won't hurt your drive train!! I've done this for years on my 92 4x4 (manuel)with no adverse effects!!
Boy! Where I drive on the beaches anyone with auto hubs gets stuck usually in the first 3 years and gets towed off only to change over to manuals? Wish I had a nickle for ever auto hub truck I've pulled out over the years. They make this grinding gear noise and don't move too much with the owner scratching his head why? Stick with the manuals, heavy duty, less moving parts and will always get you home IMO. Trimman
J.C-
Can you confirm that both "auto" and "manual" hubs are the same? I've heard others make statements that they are- just that the "manual" hubs have the vacuum port blocked off. Would be interesting to know (vs think).
The wheel hub assembly thing is the same. They just have a rubber cap thing on the vacuum port on non ESOF trucks. I'm not sure about the locking hubs though. I know the autos have "auto" and "lock" writen on the them and the manuels have "free" and "lock" writen on them but whether or not they are the same internally I don't know. I know on the autos if you take them off there is a rubber o-ring around the outside and if you take them apart there is a rubber boot on the inside on the inside face of the dial. Maybe someone with the manual hubs could take theirs off and take a look or try the vacuum pump idea to see if they'll hold a vacuum.
