Anyways ...........I bought a f150 4.2 V-6 2003 about 3 months ago when i get on most of the highways here in sothern CA evrything is cool at any speed.............
But when i get on the highways that are concrete sections i get a bounce in the rear of the truck so bad that i have to slow down to 50-60mph if i do 60+ it just starts to bounce crazy like and when i look around i see other pickups doing the same thing but not as bad (Maybe only looks not as bad).
So this leads to my question.........if i put something like rancho or other gas type shocks will that help? or will this be a waste of money?
The truck sat on the ford lot for a long time but i cant see how shocks could be bad with only 9,000 miles and 7 moths sitting on the lot plus i think it has done this since day one
2000 f150 , 4.2 / 5-speed / 3.73's w/ posi /
New Bridgestone REVO Duelers / New Monroe shocks
I have 45,000 miles on the truck, I travel all up and down the east coast with it, it doesn't matter if the tires are new or old, or if the shocks are new or old.
At speed, if I hit a bump wrong, the *** end will skip bad. It sucks, but that's how it is.
The only time I have not had this happen is when I was hauling 500 pounds of dirt in the bed. Then when I hit the bumps over 65, it tracked straight and true.
I have found that my F150 (no load in the bed) has a fairly civilized ride on a non-concrete road. But the ride on a concrete road with the gaps between concrete blocks sets up a sort of thump de thump and the ride deterorates. Don't notice any issues with tracking or vehicle control.
I just accept that the tight suspension and springs that must be capable of handling loads are tuned as best as possible. I would rather have a more capable truck for hauling then a smooth Lincoln type of ride.
I have the original Goodyear RT/S tires and I keep them at the recommended 35 PSI.
Soooo, I think the ride you are experiencing is the norm.
i have the same problem on my 97 f150, but i thought it was due to the 3/4 lowering springs. i'm glad to hear that its that way on others. Any ways to fix it though?
thanks...
My 01 4x4 does it too. Kinda like driving on a washboard. I have the OffRoad package and tow package which comes with stiffer shocks. I just kinda got used to it.
Hey mike9300 I live in SO CAL too and when I drive on those freeways I get the same effect, but not as bad as your explaining. I do have Fabtech self adjusting shocks, but I don't think that makes much difference. My opioin on this is, it's just the way the concrete is poured, and your driving a TRUCK and not a passenger car with the nice ride.
Mike - I just posted the same question. I have a 91 Ford F150 and it bounces like hell on concrete at 60+, but rides smoothly on asphalt. Looking at the camper shell, I see that the shell and the cab bounce toward and away from each other, and so I'm thinking that it's just the frame flexing, it's not stiff enough. I put new shocks on the back, no change. If someone gives you a tip on how to fix it, please let me know. Thanks.
