I once heard (not scientific, but makes sense) that the more pillars you have on a vehicle the safer they are in a roll over crash. IE, a crew cab F250 has more support pillars than a regular cab, and an Excursion has more than a crew cab. More structural support to help keep the roof from caving in. Helps hold up the weight of the vehicle. I don't know how true this is, but it does make some sense.
