Gearbox problems? Transmission?
Noticed something annoying with my 88 2.9L-B2.
Sometimes when I start the car and I want to drive away in D, the gear just kinda "jumps out" and I'm sitting there accelerating as if I were in neutral. This happens whenever the wheels have some resistance to them (for example snow) or if I try to climb a steeper street.
The only thing I can do is to push the LowRange-button and there the gear clicks in again. Sometimes I'd even have to turn off the engine and back on.
Is this some kind of gearbox-protection or is it just a sign that I'll soon have to replace it? My good ol'B2 has just about 150000km (~94000 miles) under the hood...

I got de similar problem with my B II 85
for the 2-5 first mins driving, the gear doesn't want
pas from 1-2 speed, sometimes stop between this 2 gear
and its like to be on neutral, i noticed that since the start of winter
and colder times, when very cold i get same as Dragonmike problem, vehicule doesn't want to engage when i'm on "D"rive position or engage but car doesn't advance.
after 5 mins driving usually all is ok
This morning i checked all oil level, especially transmission oil level on park and engine running idle (like written on rod). so i noticed i'm under de bottom line...
So my question is : Where is the fill cap or plug for i can add trans. oil ? maybe will help for my problem...!
which kind of oil do you suggest to me, thiking we got 4 seasons in here.
I'm not a specialiste, so don't laugh about me
all coment will appreciate
maybe this texte will be hard to well understand
I'm a french guy who write in english
Thanks Ironman
Humm, i had to much ATF i have now to drain it
so does it have plug i can remove to drain oil..?
I'm not sure is a good idea to slack the bolts pan...
Finally maybe the ATF level was correct, maybe my transmission
was not enought hot to give me good level of oil...
thanks

Filled up the ATF-tank... there was not much in there, indeed.
Now, I haven't had the opportunity to fire up the Bronk in the cold with a full ATF tank yet. 2morrow morning will be the day.
I talked to the garage-dude about it who told me that very probably the level of ATF wouldn't be the issue... but rather the Torque Converter.
Being a total n00b, I've read a little about torque converters on this forum, and it seems that it happens that this thing can get stuck somehow.
First of all, where's that thing and how does it look like? And how do I "make it work" again?...
I apologize for my ignorance... and I thank you in advance

What sticks is the "torque converter lockup clutch". Under the right conditions (steady highway type driving), the computer engages the torque converter clutch to provide a more efficient mechanical connection from the engine to the transmission instead of the usual fluidic coupling. I'm not in the habit of contradicting professional mechanics, but I don't hear about a lot of torque converter failures of the type you're describing. If the issue isn't ATF level, then I would expect some other hydraulic/mechanical fault (bad valve or seal in transmission, bad band, or the like). If you want to learn more or get more information, drop down to the transmission forum and search for A4LD and/or go up to the Explorer forum and search for A4LD. I know of at least one user here (Opera House Works) who is very familiar with the internals of the A4LD and the common failure modes. And for more information on how a torque converter works (and an automatic transmission for that matter), there is a good article at www.howstuffworks.com that can help laypeople understand how torque converters work.
