F250 7.3 Gearbox issues..

Hi Gents, Having issues with my gearbox (7.3) after a three week trip from Sydney to the Sunshine Coast pulling a 32ft 5th Wheeler. Arrived home yesterday and unhitched the 5th Wheel and all was fine. Drove down to the servo to fill up and the gearbox will not change into third gear. 1st and 2nd shift as normal, but 2nd just hold to red line. Fault code P0733 (Incorrect Third Gear ratio)

Anyone had this issue? Easy fix? I have got under and checked all wiring points etc to the gearbox and all looks ok.

Can anyone suggest a reputable F250 / Diesel mechanic around south west suburbs, im at Ingleburn NSW.

Cheers

In the first instance you might try seaching the US 1999-2003 forum for your symptoms and code.

Have you got any other observations?
e.g. What temp was the trans running at during your tow?
Have you drained off some trans fluid and checked the colour - see if there is any sign of burnt oil?
Was there any sign of metalic residue?

Every now and then a trans comes up on eBay see:

Gday SSSimon,

I've done some extensive research over the weekend on the yanky websites and found a lot of others who have had the same issue with the 4R100 not shifting from 2nd to 3rd. Seems to be one of two things

1: 2nd to 3rd shift valve getting stuck open
2: Transmission Solenoid faulty..

I have checked the trans oil and all seems to be OK, including no metalic residue.

I am in the process of ordering the aftermarket (improved) 2nd to 3rd valve from the U.S and will have a go at installing myself. Rather cheap part @ $40. If this does not fix the issue I will change the solenoid which is more expensive @ $150. If both these fail I think I will drop it off at a transmission specialist.

Does anyone know a reputable F250 mechanic in Sydney, preferably south west?

Thanks

Rob

I don't think anyone has named a reputable F250 mechanic Aust wide yet, let alone in Sydney, let alone in SW Sydney. F250's are a mis-understood truck in Aus.

You may also want to consider putting a John Woods Valve Body in your trans while you've got the pan off.

Pulled the pan off the tranny today and removed the valve body with the 2-3 shift valve and as expected it was stuck open. Pressed a screw driver against it and it sprung back to action.

I have now ordered the replacement 2-3 valve and will replace when it arrives.

Next question is what tranny fluid to use? I have been advised Castrol transmax Z but am unable to get a 20L drum.

Any other suggestions for tranny oil (fully synthetic) that i can get from Super Auto cheap or the like?

As long as its rated to Mercon or Mercon V (Ford standards) or Dexron III (a GM standard) which will most likely be on the side of the package, it doesn't matter hugely on what brand.

I got a 20L drum of Nulon trans fluid at Menai Auto Spares last year when I put in my John Woods Valve Body. Trans has been going fine running that.
