I was screwing around the other day and opened my full-size Maglite and the inside was FULL of battery acid. I mean FULL of corrosion and gunk where it had pitted the housing and eaten off the brass coating on the spring, the batteries must have froze and burst. But get this... it still worked. Really well. Must have been full of acid for at least a few weeks. Washed it in baking soda and it's good as new. I love Maglites.
As I got really frustrated at something(probably truck related) I decided to take it out on my indestructable 3-cell maglight. After fastballin git at a rock wall 5' away a few times, the thing had cracked the lense and bent the top up pretty bad.
I got a 3D cell that never gets used. I got it for Christmas about 4 or 5 years ago. I flash it up once in a while, still on the original batteries. I also got a 2AA mini Mag that came with it. That gets used around the house.
The other 2AA mini Mag I got with a Leatherman for Christmas. I use that one at work. Every day. Probably 30 or 40 times an hour. Sure is hard on bulbs though. That one has been through 6 bulbs.
Originally posted by Fritolay i have used and abused about every maglight sold except a 6 cell the worst i have done is set an engine down on top of it(out of an m113 about six thousand pounds it still works great i wont buy anything else
I had a 3D maglite that sat unused for a few years with batteries in it. Big mistake. The batteries leaked and fused to the tube. Tried everything to drive them out. Finally tossed it out but kept the top piece and the bottom cap. So now I have me a mutant maglite --- black body with red top and bottom. No mistaking whose is whose when a bunch of us get together with maglites.

I gotta chime in here to tout a really neat light I came across recently. Y'know how a Mag throws a powerful beam if your battery's are fresh when your hunting for snipes out in the woods? Well, the Lightwave floods an area with illumination. My 3 cell will light up a whole room or a garage or an engine compartment and still be burning brightly a week after any Mag has died. The business end is 10 white LED bulbs and the power consumption is almost nil. You can turn one of these on and forget it in the trunk for days and when you find it it's still lit and putting out full illumination. I believe the store where I bought mine kept one lit for 45 days and it was still bright enough to read a news paper by. You probably can't drive a dozer over it or drop it from 100 feet and it doesn't throw a 'beam' spot a hundred feet - but I stopped looking for Snipes years ago. It's just a darn good light. I paid about $35 for it.
Have a 5-cell with a battery stuck in it. Gotta get a slide-hammer to pull it out (hope it works!). Made a great pacifier and back protector when I was working security.
You know, if the batteries in the light leak and mess it up, and they are name brand batteries, you can send it to the battery manufacturer and they will replace or repair the light at no cost. (Probably replace). I had a $325 hand held tape player that I found in our office that someone had left batteries in for who knows how long, and they had totally corroded everything inside. They were duracell batteries, and they guarantee against leakage, so I sent it to them and they sent me a check for $325, no questions asked, saying that the recorder was beyond repair. The only thing you have to pay for is postage to send it to them.
