Have Mazda M5R2 trans. Especially hard to shift in 1st and 2nd. Sometimes will lock up between gears also. Removed shift cover and replaced detent ***** which helped a lot, but still have to work with it sometimes to make it shift. Where is best place to buy aftermarket parts? Or would it be better to find a used one? Truck has 197,000 miles on it but is still in very good condition and I hate to give it up. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for your replies.
Mine is on it's way out with 103K on the clock. When it officially dies, I think I'm either going to replace it with a ZF 5 speed, or a good ol' Borg Warner T-18. The ZF 5 speed is put in the F250/350s and is a much more heavy duty tranny than the M5OD. I would not put another M5OD back in it.
I sure wouldn't sell the truck if the only problem is your tranny, reaplacing a tranny is a hell of a lot cheaper than getting a different truck.
R2- I have the Mazda Tranny that you are talking about as well its actually called a M5OD. I have 250, 000 miles on mine. I had some problems with mine shifting as well and it ended up being the syncromesh was not meshing all that well. I drained the fluid and added valvoline atf highmileage vehicle fluid along with LUCAS Oil stabilizer. I did exactly as the LUCAS bottle said. I added 25% To it. I just added alittle lucas to the atf bottles until there was 25% amongst the atf fluid and then i put the fluid in the tranny starting with the ones with lucas. It took about 4.5 qts of atf fluid. After I did that my tranny started shifting better almost immediately.
Hey guys,
Thanks for the info and the fast replies. What could I expect to pay for an ZF? And, will it bolt in with no changes? I had considered adding some sort of additional lubricant such as Lucas, ( saw the little display at Advance) but did not know if it could be added to trans fluid. I've got to solve this problem before it costs me another wrecker bill, but am going to add the Lucas additive first thing tomorrow. It has some leaks and when the fluid is low it is even more difficult to shift ( naturally) so, this tells me that a lubricant which would cling to the parts would help some anyway. Once again thanks for your replies and if you have other info, I would sure like to hear it.
A used ZF at a junkyard will probably run you about $500 more or less. It will be a direct bolt up you have to make sure you get one that was behind a 300, 302 or 351. The 460 and diesels have a different bolt pattern and won't match up.
the swap is easy. everything bolts up as long as the get the right zf with the right bellousing and right tail shafe(2wd/4wd). i have one in now. you'll love it. i'm still trying to find a shifter for it though
